National Running Day 2014

Last year on National Running Day I went back & forth on whether or not I should post something inspirational or motivational – I eventually decided on doing neither.

Instead I decided to share some of my “best” race photos over that past year. And by best I mean – absolutely shameful. The kind of photos you would un-tag of yourself if they showed up on your Facebook feed and then give your friend the stank eye for even uploading them in the first place. Well, everyone except me.

You see, I love every single race photo I take. Even the bad ones (especially the bad ones!) because they share my personal message that you don’t have to look like a runner to be a runner. It’s all in the attitude you have.

From sliding down a 40 foot tarp into a pool of mud.

Mudquest 2013

To using all your strength for a jumping photo in a race only to find out the photographer didn’t even capture the jump. Or maybe he did and the fact is, you really just have no ups.

To running incredibly fast by your husband that he catches the most amazing action* shot known to man. Even though clearly there’s a girl in a boot beating you.

And there was that one time when I had no neck. After the race, I went home and the only shampoo I could use was Head & Shoulders. Get it? Get it?! BECAUSE I HAVE NO NECK, IT’S ONLY FOR HEAD AND SHOULDERS.
Oh, I kill me.

No Neck, No shame

Hope you all had a wonderful National Running Day! Until next year!

Bearathon 2014

I signed up for this half-marathon before my marathon thinking that 3 weeks would be plenty of time to recover, get back in the groove of things and knock it out of the park.

I was right about it being plenty of time for me to recover – 3 days after my marathon my legs and body actually felt well enough to begin running again. However, emotionally I was not ready to get back in the groove of things and did nothing for two weeks after my marathon. Except, like, eat everything. The Tuesday before the Bearathon I managed to run 2 miles (thanks to social media for accountability!).

2 miles FB statusBasically, I ran 24 miles one day, did nothing for 2 weeks, ran 2 miles and then woke up early Saturday morning to attempt to run 13.1 miles on a notoriously hill driven course. If you didn’t already know, I clearly make good life decisions.

Bearathon 2014 Elevation

If you’ve been here for a while, you may recall this post – Bearathon 2013 – from last year. It was the race I had been working towards which kind of catapulted me into this runner lifestyle. I even vlogged my reaction to killing it. I never knew I was a crier until I had my daughter and started running. Hormones be crazy, yo.

Anyway, back to the current race recap.

IMG_3567

I woke up around 5:30 am, got dressed, took a selfie, (because duh) and made it to the start line around 6:30 am. The half-marathon portion was set to start at 7 am and the 5k portion at 7:20 am. The race started 5 minutes late but they had music going and kept us informed, so it didn’t feel like a big deal to me.

What did feel like a big deal to me? THE HUMIDITY. The weather was in the low 60s but the humidity was 100%. I hadn’t even made it to Mile 2 and I was already sweat-soaked.

Bearathon Weather

Around mile 2.5, I talked with a lovely older lady named Lynn, who I thought was maybe in her early 50s – turns out she was 69! She had been running for over 30 years, had both her hips replaced and was still trucking along. She was pretty motivating and right around mile 3, I said goodbye and pushed forward.

Like last year, they had students at every mile marker for the water stations – and it was insane. There was so much cheering and yelling, you could actually hear it from the previous mile marker. If you are ever in the Waco, Texas area and want a challenging course that has some wonderful crowd support – Bearathon is for you. (Also, I’ll totally do it with you too and then we can go day drinking!)

Mile markers had water and Gatorade, a few of them had snacks (there was bacon at one, but I learned my lesson last time and politely refused). I ended up using Shotbloks for my ‘fuel’ by downing a couple every 4 miles or so, it kept me feeling from empty and I’m starting to find I like them better than energy gels. Salsa Feet

I’m only smiling because I was finally done with the hills.

I went into this race not expecting much considering how little I had been running and I crossed the finish line in 3:00:31 – which is a normal for me. The course had a time limit of 4 hours which equaled a 16 minute/mile pace.

Booking it

Sometimes my music doesn’t do it for me, so I’ll cut it off and count to myself with every step. 1.2.3.4.1.2.3.4. Some people have mantra’s, I have numbers. It works for me. And with all that said, the above photo is my counting face. Lovely, isn’t it?

Something I did notice was the support dwindling/stations running out of Gatorade near the end of the race for me. I mean, I’m slower than average but still finished a full hour ahead of the time limit and it can be discouraging - so I can only imagine what it felt like for those that finished after me.

For the record, this is not the first time I’ve noticed feeling like a ‘loose-end’ in a race where I was near the end of the pack. So, it’s not just a Bearathon thing (and I don’t remember feeling that way for the 2013 race) But, I do think it’s something that should be addressed for those of us out there who love to run but just do it on the slow.

After I grabbed my medal & t-shirt, I stuck around for a bit to cheer on people and then managed to steal a whole pizza. I am not ashamed.

IMG_3574

I know I’ve provided you all with a lot of fairly decent pictures in today’s post, and that’s probably a little disappointing. I mean, who wants to see someone looking good while running – no one. No one wants to see that.

So, I know the real reason you’re here – for the crappy race day photos I’m always so proud of. So, without further ado:

Bear Hands

This was my attempt at a jumping photo.
All it resulted in was a head shake from the photographer & weird hand placement.

 No Neck, No shame

Sweat, hills, and counting make me lose the ability to form a neck.

And this next one is for those of you who have asked me how I can be so happy during a race. The fact is, often times, I’m not – I’m just struggling to get through the next mile – but when I see a camera, it’s automatic. I turn into a giant hamball who immediately goes for the thumbs up.

Until we run again, friends!

The Great 28

A couple months ago, I celebrated my 28th birthday. I thought long and hard (that’s what she said) about posting something that explains 28 wonderful things I plan on doing in the coming year, or 28 thought-provoking revelations I’ve had in the past 28 years, or showing you my favorite 28 dance moves (hint: they all include the running man) – but it would have been completely forced.

This is another year for me, another year to push forward with my running, to try and be a better wife and mother, a friend and an overall person. This is just a continuation from the day before when I was only a young 27.

So if you’re hoping for something amazing and ground-breaking here, uh, my bad.

Instead, you get to hear me brag about how my little sister (who lives in Colorado) made it to Texas for the first time in 4 years. This means that she has never met my daughter and I have never met hers. To say I was simply excited – under-freaking-statement of the year.

We offered up our guest room with the only requirement being that she had to hang out with me on my birthday. When I told her we were planning on riding 4 wheelers with some friends that night, she was more than down. We hung out during the day with our kids and then passed them off ever so gently to Lillie’s Godparents (who are also the wonderful people who took us in as teenagers) and got our birthday on.

Photos are minimal because 1. I was on a 4 wheeler most of the time &  2. I was enjoying my time with my baby sister and didn’t want to take photo breaks constantly. Sometimes real life takes the reins instead of internet fun, and it’s totally worth it.

Am is on the 4-wheeler that is sitting in the lake. I do not apologize for the crappiness of the photo.

Overall, it was a really wonderful way to ring in my 28th year by spending time with my sister and niece.

IMG_2047 Tea time is very important business.

I was sad to see them go but grateful for the time we were able to spend together. Being sad didn’t last too long though – a few weeks later she decided she wanted to be closer to family and next thing I know the husband & I are hitting the road to Colorado! 20130913_145127 This was in Amarillo, Texas – home of the free 72 oz steak (that is if you can eat it in under an hour). I’ve never really had the luxury of being a small person (5’10 at age 11 can do that to you) so this is probably the closest I’ll ever get to feeling unlike an Amazon.

Except for when we helped Amber move to Colorado 5 years ago. We had also stopped in the same place when that happened. DSC01085 Oh look, a young Al & Tam. How precious we are.

Beyond having my sister back – here are a few other things that have happened in the past two months of my 28th year.

I decided to run a marathon. Like whoa, right?IMG_2476

I found a pink truck. With half naked girls on it. Then I forced the husband to take a picture of me with it because that’s the kind of juvenile things married folks like us tend to do.IMG_2275

IMG_2274

I met a guy with a legit mullet, took a picture with the sexiest face I could muster and then posted it on this blog.

IMG_2329 I mastered the side braid.IMG_2276 IMG_2415 and I painted pumpkins with the kid.IMG_2449 So, the Great 28 is off to a fantastic start – here’s to keeping up the momentum!

Can’t Hold Us

Just a nice, weird random post for you today.

1. Katie at State of Change made a promise. And I, for one, would love to see it carried out. 250orbustShe’s a great blog to follow so head her way. We have this amazing textual relationship where we talk about our daughters, compliment the husband’s biceps and send each other pictures of food we eat (mostly me complaining about baby carrots). She’s also really honest with her readers, which is wonderfully refreshing in the blog world. I’m convinced that she needs to write a book. (DO IT KATIE!) She only needs 5 more!

2. I am in love with my Twitter/Blog friends. I have a 5k tomorrow and was looking for some new music to jam too so I tweeted this and seriously, the response AMAZEBALLS. And not to mention, Holly, had a great idea for a music swap and I jumped on that like a redneck on Keystone – so you’ll see more of that next week once all the details are worked out. #JellyofmyJamsSwap

3. Per #2 I downloaded a few new songs and I made the following playlist for tomorrow (with a few of my own additions) – I’m pumped. I’m totally listening to it right now as I type this. Blogger Style Playlist 4. My daughter wanted to take a picture of our cat, Smokey, yesterday. So, uh, here you go.

IMG_1301 Yeah, that’s my knee the cat is digging into. She did not want her picture taken. But our yard looks nice, doesn’t it?

5. Someone found my makeup (when she was supposed to be using the potty all by herself) and then went all creepy on me as I tried to take a photo. Seriously. Let’s just say that while she enjoys makeup she does not enjoy makeup remover. Thy bathtub runneth over with tears.GoldLillie

Hope your weekend is filled with fun, laughter and lotssss of wine. You deserve it.

Easy Peasy Chicken Greasy

Do you guys ever take pictures with every intention of posting them on your blog and then, like, you never do?

I do this all.the.time. Like, I’ll take a photo and think, “Oh that would be a good post about (insert post subject here)” and then by the time I get near a computer I totally brainfart. I then have 25 nearly identical copies of the same photo stuck on my camera/phone for years weeks.

Uh, yeah

I have a problem with deleting apparently. Oops.

So, I thought I’d just do a fun, photo-filled post for Friday of random pictures I’ve taken recently.
Easy peasy chicken greasy.

DSC02516 Easter 2013 loot. Yes, her hand is in a box of candy.

IMG_1013 Church Easter Egg hunt with her cousins. They loaded up.

IMG_1045 What my daughter sees every day. My gawd, she is lucky. (Yes, she took this picture)

IMG_1058Park time! And because my best friend called it – The bigger the bow, the better the mama.

IMG_0955  She looks terrified, but I promise she loved going to Sesame Street Live.
Just not as much as I did apparently.

IMG_0970Monkey see, Monkey do.
Kids are weird, am I right?

Here’s to a great weekend!
